Calorie Counting: They Don't Tell You...

Updated: Jan 25, 2022

Calorie counting, I'd argue is the most useful tool we have when it comes to our nutrition. Not because it's some kind of magic pill or way of life. In fact, it's often like pouring salt in your eyes.

None the less, it forces you to confront what you're actually eating; painful for not. Which is why I argue, it's one of the best tools we have. And it's free.

But, what the don't tell you is...

that finding your caloric target is only the first step. Aiming for this new caloric target is step 2 and changing (likely) that target is step 3. Step 4 is repeating steps 2 and 3 over and over again.

You see it's hard to sell uncertainty.

The truth is exericise / nutriton is a lot of trial and error. We've learned some scientific rules along the way but we're dealing with not only the complexity of the human body but also life schedules, emotions, beliefs and more.

Calorie counting is simply data collection. Calorie calculating is simply an educational guess. Both have their own error rates and just because neither is exact doesn't mean they're not helpful.

For me and my clients...

I've found tracking for 4 days (Fri - Mon) tells us much of what we need to know. It's rare that we don't learn volumes just from those 4 days.

Before you go down this path it's important to objectively understand the benefits, as well as the limitations it has.

If you want to learn more about how I track with my clients, how long, what we look for, how we make corrections and more, feel free to check out my "Nutritional Coaching" on the WORK TOGETHER page. It's my favorite service I offer and favorite ways to work with people.
